Next week is Refugee Week and there is certainly a lot going on in Sunderland, starting from 17 June.
Events at Sunderland Refugee Week
On Monday 17 June, there is the Walk of Sanctuary. To take part in this, meet at the Minster SR1 3ET, at 9,30 a.m. There will be photos at 9.45 and the walk will start at 10 am, with a picnic in Barnes Park at 1.30 pm. Participants are asked to make it colourful!
On Tuesday 18 June there is a football tournament at Goals between 11am-3 pm
On Wednesday 19 June, there are a few events: Breakfast with a refugee from 10-12 noon at Back on the Map SR2 8JG, while at St Mary’s at SR1 1 TQ, there is the FODI Refugee Week lunch with food and dancing. There is also a cricket match YAV v NAS/UWT (teaching union)
Additionally, there is a Refugee Week film showing of “Limbo” at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle
On Thursday 20 June, there is the Fightback Refugee Week lunch at the Eagle Building SR1 2AX, with food and live music
On Friday 21 June there is cooking in Stockton Road URC Church, from 10 am. Cooks needed!
On Saturday 22 June, the Lift the Ban/ market stall event is taking place at West Sunniside at the Sunshine Cooperative from 10am-4 pm
To complete the week, on Sunday 23 June, the Minster is hosting the Citizen Songwriters event with an Iranian musician from 2-2.15 pm, Ceremony from 2.15-3 pm and Stories of Sanctuary music from 3-3.30 pm
Additionally, each day during the week: a different family to share on social media their experience of “Our Home”
