Sleep

Photo by SHAHBAZ AKRAM from Pexels
I fold myself into bed
snuggle in beloved duvet
wrapped warm
night time chrysalis

Dreaming soft dreams
on soft pillows
soft warm body
log like

Some creatures sleep alert
unhemispheric
one eye sharp
or else they fall or drown

Some restless nights I
sleep with half a brain
to save myself
from drowning

Do alien species sleep?
Do they visit in our dreams?
Confused by our stop-start life
a species hiccuping to self destruction

Human pupae
compounding our mistakes
as we sleep
or restlessly turn

I slough off the bark of sleep
struggle to morning light
a faulty butterfly
another chance, another day
