The North will rise again
and remember its true calling
to be a place of community and work
and innovation and justice.
We will rebuild our shattered communities
and mend our broken people
and be all that we can be again.
We will care for our sick
and help our bairns
along the road to a fulfilled life.
We will rebuild our railways
from Newcastle to Liverpool
and from Sheffield to Carlisle
and we will have buses that serve our people
and not seek to merely profit from them.
We will remember our heritage with pride
while looking to a greener future
with confidence and hope.
We will cherish our beautiful mountains,
our refreshing waterfalls and our silent forests,
our golden beaches and our dry stone walls,
our sacred places and our silent rivers.
We will cherish our great cities reborn
and our small towns and villages rediscovered,
our great cathedrals and our tiny chapels,
our tall chimneys and pithead wheels,
our vibrant places of life and love
and our silent places of thought and beauty.
We will take pride in our speech
and in our songs and poems,
in our music and poetry and in our art and our drama.
We will stand up to those with smug faces
who would not have us rise again.
We will remember those faraway
and welcome the stranger among us.
We will build turbines for the restless wind
and panels for the shining, silent sun.
We will make batteries for electric cars
and heat our homes with hot water from mines.
Just give us what we need
To fulfil this great task
Just let us have the tools
That is all we ask.
