We may have had one of the wettest Julys on record and so far August is not looking that promising either weather wise though that does not mean you cannot dream of long summer days and nights which hopefully we still have to come. As far as Pizza Express is concerned summer is still definitely on the menu. I went along to try some of their new additions for the season and was pleasantly surprised.
For starters there are some new Dough Balls including the Hot Honey Dough Balls (6.95) though I am not sure that the combination of heat and sweetness goes together: the dough balls are drizzled in hot honey and tossed in chilli and basil sauce. If you join the Pizza Express Club you will receive these free on your first visit, so may be well worth joining.
You might think like me that there are only so many toppings you can put on a pizza base, well think again! By bringing a touch of Cuba to the restaurant they have introduced the La Cubana pizza (£16.95).
The pizza features succulent Cuban pulled pork and roasted peppers topped with a sprinkle of tomato, red onion, fresh coriander and a wedge of lime. Amazingly all these toppings work brilliantly together. A light and appetising treat.
For vegetarians, there is the new Padana pizza (£16.45) consisting of Goat’s cheese, sweet caramelised onions, spinach, mozzarella, tomato, garlic oil and red onions resulting in a feast of great tastes and textures. For a good cause, a 25p discretionary donation is made to the restaurant’s chosen charity – Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy.
If you have room for dessert after all this indulgence, you might be tempted with the new Sunshine Sundae (£7.95), one of the most refreshing Sundae’s I have tried. The ice cream, whipped cream matched with mango, passion fruit curd and fresh passion fruit all felt like summer in a sundae – even though it was still pouring down outside!
Other new additions for the summer include the return of the Honeycomb Cream Slice (£7.75) and Baked Vanilla Cheesecake (£7.75).
To wash all this down the refreshing Naturally Pink Apple Juice (£3.75) was a thick and juicy drink that was not as sweet as you may think.
The summer might have let us all down so far although with these new summer additions PizzaExpress still have something on the menu to make you shine.
