Once again it’s like a game of ‘Where’s Wally?’
Wouldn’t you have thought that the Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party would be front and centre when even a hint of controversy needed addressing? Have the airwaves and social media been bombarded by Matt Vickers expressing his disgust with one side or the other? Or, possibly, a calm and reasoned take on events and what needs to happen next?
Twitter? Nada.
TV? Nope.
Radio? Who me?
I can just see a reporter knocking on his door, and getting no answer, but as they are walking away they look back and see the curtain twitch.
We know you’re in there Mr Vickers, we just want a comment!
Is he hiding behind the curtains with his phone switched off, not opening any emails, because he is terrified that he will have to use his own intellect, political savvy, and diplomacy?
It’s a strange situation for Matt, he must be conflicted.
Defending Johnson
There he was, ultra-loyal to Boris, the sainted Boris. No matter what Boris did, what lies he told, how egregious his behaviour, our Matt was there defending him.
Right at the end when 90% of the Conservative Party knew it was over, and that his lies had finally caught up with him, Matt was there with a tear in his eye, applauding Boris as he was drummed out of Downing St in disgrace.
Our Matt, loyal to the sainted Boris to the very end.
On the other hand, our Matt is Deputy Chairman and needs keep on the good side of Sunak, because he probably thinks that Deputy Chairman is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
Why the silence?
Not capable of a coherent, personal opinion? Cowardice? Lack of character?
Has nobody from CCHQ told him what he is supposed to think? Hasn’t CCHQ given him an idiot’s sheet?
Sadly, I suspect it’s a combination of them all.
