Around 60 local residents joined the celebration on Saturday 26 April as the brand new West Park Community Garden officially opened in South Shields.
The launch event brought together families, neighbours, and supporters from across the area — with food, crafts, planting activities and even a few friendly games of bowls!
The garden is the start of something special:
- A place for people of all ages to learn about growing their own food
- A green space to bring the community together
- A new way to welcome more people into West Park
The garden has been made possible thanks to the hard work of local volunteers, supported by David Banks, Trustee of the Allotment and Community Garden Association, and Green Party councillor for West Park ward, Nicky Gynn.

“This is exactly what our community needs — a space to grow, to learn, and to come together. I’m so proud of the local residents who have made this garden a reality, and I can’t wait to see it flourish. Everyone is welcome to come along, get involved, and be part of something positive.”
The Friends group has exciting plans to continue developing the garden — and would love more people to join them.
