A complaint has been made to the Labour Party about Luke Akehurst and his comments, made in 2020 describing non-zionist Jews. Akehurst is the Labour Party candidate for North Durham. Many from the Jewish community have been very disturbed and upset by Akehurst’s comments.
In a video clip posted on twitter/X we hear Luke Akehurst say:
“They have abandoned very much of their Jewish identity. They don’t go to shul at all. It’s become a purely cultural thing around the occasional bowl of chicken soup or whatever…”
Luke Akehurst is the Labour Party candidate for North Durham. Before his candidacy was announced he deleted around 2,000 tweets.
Complaint to the Labour Party
Councillor Martin Abrams made the complaint this morning and posted on twitter. He is concerned that Akehurst makes these critical and offensive comments about a section of the Jewish community, and describes the comments as antisemitic. He also finds the comments divisive as they treat different parts of the Jewish community differently when in fact they are all Jewish.
Abrams, who is Jewish and on the left of the Labour Party, told North East Bylines that he sees double standards in the Labour Party – racist comments should be treated as racist comments, whoever makes them. He feels that there are often different rules for those on the left of the party and those on the right. He referred to Keir Starmer’s stated position on antisemitism when he promised that “under his leadership he takes a Zero Tolerance approach to Antisemitism”, something that Abrams agrees with.
Councillor Abrams hopes that the Labour Party will take his complaint seriously, and waits for a reply.
