Political hopefuls will be contesting all 78 seats on Newcastle City Council, with voters going to the polls on 7 May. Three seats will be up for grabs in each of the city’s 26 wards, meaning that voters will be able to cast votes for three candidates on their ballot paper. This set of elections is a critical one that could shape the political landscape of Tyneside for years to come.
Labour has run the city council since 2011, but currently operates a minority administration and the party’s dominance across Tyne and Wear is under threat this year – with ‘all out’ elections also being held in Gateshead, Sunderland, and South Tyneside.
Labour, the Lib Dems, the Green Party, and Reform UK are all standing full slates of 78 candidates in Newcastle, while the Conservatives are putting up only 35.
Rather than defending her seat in West Fenham, council leader Karen Kilgour is instead standing in Blakelaw and Cowgate.
This election will also mark the end of former council leader Nick Kemp’s 24-year spell on the local authority. The Byker councillor, who quit the Labour Party in 2024 after resigning as council leader, is not seeking re-election.
