Following the election of Karen Clark to North Tyneside Mayor last month, her council seat in Longbenton and Benton is now vacant and there will be a by-election on 2 July to fill the vacancy.  North Tyneside Green Party member Jim Howard has been officially selected as the Green Party candidate and has been endorsed by Majority members and the North Tyneside Community Independents.

For the upcoming Longbenton and Benton by-election, The Green Party North Tyneside, Majority, and the North Tyneside Community Independents will be campaigning under the banner of North Tyneside Together, bringing together progressive voices to challenge Labour, offer a clear alternative to Reform and get Jim elected on 2 July.

Jim commented:

“I was an engineer for over 35 years working in sustainability, helping major organisations cut their environmental impact, and leading major energy efficiency and renewable projects that saved energy, supported jobs, and boosted local economies.  Now retired, I’ve turned my focus to the issues I care about most.  I want to use my experience to help tackle the cost of living, lower energy bills by insulating homes to keep people warm, and protect our parks and green spaces for our kids and grandkids.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the Green Party to campaign with other like-minded groups.  I firmly believe that there is more that unites us than divides us and we look forward to trying this new way of doing politics.”

Jamie Driscoll, former independent Mayor of North of Tyne and leader of Majority said:

“Everyone feels let down by Labour.  Even Labour members and councillors tell me they’re looking for something new.  Nigel Farage has let his true blue colours show, with plans to take working people’s pensions of them. Majority are backing candidates like Jim who also stand for compassionate, common-sense politics.”

Cath Davis, Independent Candidate for NT Mayor elections in 2025 added:

“We need to shift away from the main parties and show there is another alternative. We know Jim is committed to grassroots democracy and will help change the way the council works. We will be campaigning to get Jim elected on 2 July.”
