A public consultation has been launched to allow North Tyneside residents to have their say on how a £20mn fund should be spent in the Percy Main area.

The cash comes from the central government as part of its Pride in Place scheme which aims to allow residents to lead improvements in their communities, ranging from pavement repairs to cultural venues and green spaces investments. Percy Main’s allocation forms part of a national project with almost 250 areas across the country receiving a financial boost to be spread over the next 10 years.

The fund is not solely restricted to Percy Main but also includes parts of Chirton, Meadow Well, East Howdon and the Royal Quays. The consultation closes on May 21, after which the responses will be reviewed by the council.

How the money is spent will be divided by a ‘Neighbourhood Board, made up mostly of residents, local organisations, the MP and at least one ward councillor. The local authority is now open to applications to join.

According to the local authority’s FAQ section of the consultation online, “residents will always have the biggest voice”.

Through the council’s survey, on the Our North Tyneside Voice website, residents can raise their own concerns about their local areas, ranging from buildings to local service, and transport. The survey also includes the opportunity for longer answers or up to 20,000 characters.

There are also in-person events scheduled, including one at the Parks Sports Centre on Monday, March 23 from 10am to 1pm.

In the neighbouring authority of Gateshead, the local council recently set up a neighbourhood board to administer £20m of Pride in Place funding throughout Wrekenton and Beacon Lough over the next 10 years.
