Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland and Co-Chair of the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) All-Party Parliamentary Group, hosted a roundtable in Parliament today to bring together industry leaders, engineers, investors, and climate experts to discuss the future of CCUS and its potential for Teesside.
The roundtable heard from Dr Emily Nurse of the Climate Change Committee on the cost of delay to the UK’s carbon budgets, Dr Emily Sidhu of the National Wealth Fund on the financial models needed to unlock investment, and Professor Geoffrey Maitland from Imperial College London on the UK’s engineering strengths in carbon capture and storage.
Luke was particularly pleased to welcome representatives from Teesside’s East Coast Cluster, including Kellas Midstream, Harbour Energy, Carbon Clean, and SSE Thermal, all playing a vital role in delivering major CCUS projects to the area.
Luke Myer MP said: “This is not just about hitting net zero – it is about delivering a green jobs revolution on Teesside. With the right backing, CCUS could mean over 8,000 skilled jobs in Teesside by 2040 and more than 25,000 jobs across the wider supply chain. These are jobs in clean energy, carbon capture, and green manufacturing – the kind of work that allows young people to build a good life here without having to leave home to find opportunity.”
He added: “CCUS has a vital role to play in making sure Teesside is at the heart of Britain’s clean energy future. I will keep pushing to make sure we get the investment, the skills, and the policy certainty to make that happen.”
