The names of four businessmen come up in any discussion around Teesworks – as they own 90% of the company. The remaining 10% is owned by the public STDC.

Musgrave owns 45% of Teesworks Ltd.

Joseph Christopher Musgrave OBE (Chris) was born in December 1965 in Hartlepool; son of Mary and Joseph Musgrave (Joe). He has two sisters, Lynn and Lesley-Ann, the Miss Great Britain winner of 1986. In 1990 Joe and Chris established a company refurbishing supermarkets called JCM. It was successful and employed 250 people.

Due to JCM’s success it secured a contract from the Ministry of Defence in 1997 to dispose of military equipment from the British Armed forces in Hong Kong during the transition of the British colony to China. A high security vetting process for bidders of the equipment was put in place. The auctions raised millions of pounds for HM Treasury with JCM taking a commission.

They then moved onto property and business site development where they bought sites across the country including land at Wynyard. This is where they developed Wynard Business Park. Joe Musgrave died in 2016.

Here we see another profile with just one company registered to it:

• Teesside International Airport Business Park Ltd – appointed on 2 Apr 2020 along with Julie Gilhespie as part of the TVCA. * Martin Corney*

Now this may be the last profile, or it may not. It’s a quite extensive swathe of existence over on Companies House when it comes to Chris Musgrave.

• MCCM Land Ltd (management of real estate on a fee or contract basis) – Director, appointed on 8 Dec 2022 * Martin Corney*

Teesworks: the fourth man

His son

Chris Musgrave’s son, none other than Joseph Christopher Musgrave (they really like that name I guess), also has a profile. The companies are as follows:

  • West Wynyard Woodland Ltd (silviculture and other forestry activities) – appointed on 18 Feb 2020
  • JCM Plant Ltd (renting and leasing of construction and civil engineering machinery and equipment) – appointed on 27 Oct 2020
  • Purdy Capital Ltd (management consultancy activities other than financial management) – appointed on 18 Jan 2021
  • JCM Land Ltd (development of building projects) – appointed on 19 Jan 2021
  • Redpark Leisure Ltd (hotels and similar accommodation) – appointed on 8 Feb 2023

What’s interesting about his son’s profile is that JCM Plant Ltd who rents and leases construction machinery was set up just over one month after the first contractor Hall Construction entered the Teesworks site in Sept 2020. JCM has leased machinery previously. For the Wynyard business park development. Who oversaw this project? Chris Musgrave.

Another interesting factoid on the journey through Chris Musgrave’s active companies is that the only one who’s nature of business in remediation is Teesworks Ltd. So, what qualifies this extensive property developer to oversee the largest remediation of land in the UK’s recent history?

OBE

On receiving an OBE Chris Musgrave declared:

“Those early years were the ‘golden years’ for me. I learned about the importance of hard work and recognising an opportunity.”

And so, he did, in the form of Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen.
