The University and College Union (UCU) published on X, formally Twitter, the number of staff on six figures salaries , ranging from £100,001 to £190,001, between 2016 and 2023. This comes following University bosses announcing a £20m reduction in its salary budget, equating to 5% in total, or 300 full-time equivalent positions, and another £10m in additional savings.

A voluntary redundancy scheme has also been relaunched which is open to all University employees, though compulsory job losses have not not ruled out. The result of a ballot by the UCU on industrial action will be announced in February.

Salary List Published on X stats

                             2016-17          2023-23

£100,001:           60                       143

£130,001:          14                         52

£160,001:            1                           15

£190,001:           0                            2

Total                    75                        212

The total remuneration of the University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Prof Chris Day, also increased from £387,800 to £404,300 between 2023/22 and 2022/23.

Via X, the UCU stated: “We did a little table, based on the annual reports, on the number of people earning over £100,000 a year. We’re still waiting for the 23-24 numbers, but we see a trend…”

In response, a Newcastle University spokesperson said: “We disclose this annually in our accounts and due to a number of factors, including NHS pay rises for clinical staff members and the impact of inflation, the number of University colleagues in this category has increased.

“This number is comparable to other research-intensive institutions.”

The Local Democracy Reporting Service revealed in September last year Newcastle University was facing a £35m shortfall in funding, largely due to a drop in international student recruitment. This sparked a series of measures, heightening tension between the UCU and the institution, including travel restrictions, promotion freezes, and a review into the University’s building programme.
